How to keep stats from the bench without missing the game

You do not need a stat crew. Here is a setup one coach, an assistant or a parent can run on a phone, and what to do with the numbers after.

Most community teams do not keep stats. Not because nobody cares, but because the clipboard version is miserable: one person, one pencil, a game that does not stop, and a sheet that gets copied into a spreadsheet at midnight, if it gets copied at all.

Give the job to one person, and make it a tap

Stats get kept when keeping them is easier than not. Hand the phone to an assistant or a parent on the bench. The pad should be big buttons: tap the player, tap what happened. A made two, a missed three, a rebound, a foul. Nothing to type, nothing to add up.

Keep the misses too

A shooting line without the misses is just a points total. Record the attempts, made or missed, and a player who went 0 for 3 from deep shows 0/3, not a blank. That is the number that tells you who should be shooting threes next week.

Save the score at the end of every quarter

Most league sheets ask for the score by quarter or period. If you mark the end of each one as it happens, the split is done by the final buzzer instead of reconstructed from memory in the parking lot.

Mistakes will happen, so make them cheap

Somebody will tap the wrong player in a fast break. The fix should be one button, not a lost game. An undo, a running list of every play with the score after it, and a way to take a point back keep the book honest.

What to do with the numbers

  • Share the box score with the team after the game, while everyone still cares.
  • Look at the season line, not one game. One bad night is noise; five is a pattern.
  • Use it in conversations with players: "you are 40 percent at the line, let us work on it" lands better than "shoot better".

In TheCrib, live stats is a pad of big buttons for your sport. It keeps every play with the score after it, has End of quarter under the score, and builds the box score when you hit Finish, made over attempted, ready as a PDF. It is on the free plan. If you would rather keep paper, print the scan sheet and fill the box score from a photo after the game.
