How to manage a youth basketball team: a coach’s checklist

If you coach youth basketball, you already know the job is bigger than practices and games. You are also the scheduler, the fee collector, the communicator, and the person who somehow ends up with twelve parents' phone numbers. Here is a checklist to keep the off-court stuff from taking over.

Before the season

  • Build your roster in one place, with jersey numbers, positions, and a parent contact for each player.
  • Set your team fee and a clear due date so you are not chasing money in December.
  • Get everyone onto one app or channel so day-one communication is not a scramble.

Every week

  • Post the week’s games and practices early and ask for RSVPs so you know your numbers.
  • Plan one focused practice (defense, shooting, transition), not five things at once.
  • Send one reminder to anyone who has not paid or responded, not a group blast.

On game day

  • Post the time, location, and warm-up plan once so you are not answering the same text ten times.
  • Track basic stats (points, assists, rebounds, fouls) so you can talk to players about real numbers.
  • Keep a quick note on what to work on next practice while it is fresh.

The thing that makes all of it easier

Notice how much of the list is communication and tracking, not coaching. That is exactly the part an app should handle. When your roster, schedule, attendance, payments, stats, and team chat are in one place, the checklist mostly runs itself, and you get your evenings back.

TheCrib is built for the youth basketball coach doing all of it solo: roster and stats tuned for basketball, fee collection via Stripe, a tactics board for your plays, and one place your whole team actually checks. Set your team up free and get back to coaching.
